Previous Page Early MGB Seat Restoration Next Page
We often do seats and upholstery at the shop - here is an example of the common early MGB seats being brought back to life.
They may look rough, but they are completely original making them an ideal candidate for being restored to original specs. The first step is removing them from the car - 4 bolts each.
We like to separate the units, and recover each cushion individually. With the covers removed, we can examine the cushions. Good cushions, like the ones in these backboards should not be replaced! It is easier to recover the formed originals than working with stiff new ones. Here is the seat bottom completely stripped down.
New diaphragms installed. All cushions staged, awaiting new covers. The only glue applied is around the perimeter of the inner pleats, the rest is left free to be stretched over the frame.
Bottom cover fit.
This nice original packing is left in place, as it helps the covers slide on smoothly. The Cardboard backing is also shown, which should be renewed if deteriorated. Both covers slid over the upper frames and glue applied to the perimeter of the pleats. Bottom seams secured.
Seats reassembled! Care taken during assembly assures that the pleats will line up in the end Back in the car
